How do you motivate yourself? What drives you to keep improving and making sure that you are always on top?
When I was training for a half marathon, the training came really easy. I knew I had to run 13 miles on race day and I really didn't fancy being the guy wheezing at the back of the race. So I set myself a training plan, ate properly and ended up with a really good time.
However, my first run after the half marathon was really difficult! What did I have to aim for? I'd already completed my run, what's the point in training anymore?
This got me thinking about motivating yourself in general. How do I motivate myself to design? How do I motivate yourself to not only learn new things but to keep learning?
Being a designer, this is one of the most important things that you can do. Keep yourself ahead, but how do you do this? Well, in this blog, i'll explain how I motivate myself...
1. A fear of getting left behind
One of my teachers once said said to me - "Matthew, if you don't pull your finger out and realise your potential, you will get left behind!"Now this really stuck with me and still does. I have worked in organisations where people have become so comfortable in their job they haven't bothered learning anything new. I call them driftwood! Imagine being a designer and not embracing the digital age?
Its career suicide!! Im not saying take a total career change, but you have to embrace the new trends in design if you want to keep ahead and be successful.
2. Whats the other guy doing?
Im quite a competitive guy. I personally think everyone is to a certain degree, but knowing somebody is learning faster or more than me gets me. I've never been the greatest designer, i've admitted that, but my strengths have lied in other areas. One of those areas has been keeping up with new trends and what the latest software is. If somebody else is getting the jump on me...well it makes me work harder to find the next trend.
3. Self satisfaction
What's better than knowing you've really achieved something? Especially when you've worked really hard to get there. Think of a time when you did a really good job and people were really impressed. How did it make you feel? Good right! Use that feeling to motivate yourself, surely you'd want to feel like that all the time, why wouldn't you?
So...these are just a few ways that I motivate myself and every situation calls for a different type of motivation. I'm sure that everybody is different and motivates themselves in whatever way they feel most comfortable, but thats the key, find out what it is that motivates you!
Find out what drives you, what gets you up in the morning, what puts a smile on your face...make sure that you harness that feeling and never forget what it feels like otherwise your motivation will fade and sometimes, when its gone, its very difficult to get back.
Trust me I know, but thats for another bedtime blog.
